Celebration of World Soil Day
Description
Objectives: The major objectives of the celebration of World Soil Day are as follows:
1. To increase awareness among students about the importance of World Soil Day, emphasizing its role in promoting global soil health and sustainable agriculture practices.
2. To showcase the process of creating soil profiles, emphasizing the various horizons and their significance in supporting crop growth.
3. To emphasize the importance of soil sampling in soil health analysis and its impact on fertilizer recommendations, predicting crop responses, soil classification, and identification of soil-related issues.
4. To provide insights into various soil types prevalent in Gujarat, including black soil, hilly soil, red soil, alluvial soil, desert soil, lateritic soil, saline, and alkaline soils.
Details: The details of celebration of World Soil Day are as follows:
KKIASR at Ganpat University celebrated "World Soil Day" on December 5, 2023, with an engaging and informative event. The celebration included a demonstration of soil profiling and soil sampling, providing students with valuable hands-on experience and knowledge. The enthusiastic participation of students reflected their eagerness to explore the fascinating activities of soil profiling, aligning seamlessly with their academic syllabus.
Amidst the celebration, Dr. Maurvi Vasavada, the Dean of KKIASR, urged the students to actively participate and elucidated the paramount significance of soil in agriculture. Dr. Janaki Movaliya, Dr. Kishan Mashaliya, and Dr. Ankit Patel, Assistant Professors from the Faculty of Agriculture and Allied Sciences, KKIASR, actively encouraged and guided the students in creating detailed soil profiles. During the soil profiling activity, students meticulously gathered various types of soils, showcasing distinct horizons such as O, A, B, C, E, and R. This demonstration vividly illustrated the significance of different soil layers in supporting the growth and development of crops.
In the soil sampling activity, students employed the zig-zag method with suitable augers to collect samples from different areas. The commendable efforts of the students ensured that the samples were representative of the entire field, promising reliable analysis results. Emphasis was placed on the importance of soil sampling in soil health analysis, highlighting its impact on fertilizer recommendations, crop response predictions, soil classification, and issue identification.
Overall, the session proved to be informative and enriching for both students and faculty, fostering a deeper understanding of soil science and its practical applications.
Outcomes of the World Soil Day Celebration:
- Improved proficiency among students in soil profiling and sampling techniques, demonstrated through the creation of accurate and detailed soil profiles during the World Soil Day celebration.
- Created awareness and understanding of diverse soil types in Gujarat, as well as the significance of soil sampling in guiding agricultural practices, contributing to informed decision-making among students.
- Encouraged environmental responsibility in students, shown through their active involvement and discussions on soil features, water retention, and sustainable practices for growing crops.
