Ganpat University – Kantaben Kashiram Institute of Agriculture Sciences and Research had arranged a visit for B.Sc. Agriculture, Semester II & IV students on 1st February 2024 to Fruit Research Station, Dehgam, Gujarat. The trip began with a lot of enthusiasm and vigour. Students and faculty departed from the university at 09:00 AM and reached the destination at 11:00 AM.
The area of FRS was 20 ha initiated in 1962-63 for research on fruit crops under State Department of Agriculture that was later transferred to the University with the establishment of agricultural universities of State and North Gujarat in 1972 and 2004, respectively. The focus of activities was on water management through micro-irrigation system in fruit crops. The station completed the micro irrigation project and now supports uniform planting materials of promising cultivars of various crops. As a result the station has been included in the Mega Seed Project for supplying uniform quality planting materials of various crops like mango, ber, date palm, guava, pomegranate, and other such crops.
Assistant Research Scientist Mr. Himanshu Barot lectured about their organization's cultivation practices and intercultural operations of fruit crops such as mango, sapota, guava, phalsa, lemon, date palm, and jamun, as well as flower crops like Rajnigadha and Rose. He also explained rejuvenation practices, irrigation techniques, and mulching methods for fruit crops. During our visit to the fruit farm orchard, spanning about 20 hectares, we observed research on mango, guava, sapota, citrus, ber, and phalsa. Students also gained knowledge about various insects, pests, diseases, and physiological disorders affecting different fruit crops. Additionally, students learned about ongoing projects including the strengthening of fruit research, the establishment of a center for floriculture research, the creation of an ITI for gardener training, and a mega seed project, all of which were funded by ICAR and the State Government.
